THE STORY:

Of course it sounds strange to hear or read about the existence of a coal washing plant. This department was nevertheless an important part of coal mining. The coal seams do not always contain pure coal. The layers were sometimes veined or interwoven with other rocks. When the coal reached the surface, it had to be purified. Previously this was done manually. Boys, and once girls, stood at a "picking table" over which the coal moved. They had to pick up the stones. Later this happened in a more sophisticated way. The coal floated above in a stream of heavy water and was mechanically filtered out. The rock was carried to the terrils. The large cone-shaped heaps of stones that are still visible in the landscape today had their beginnings in the coal washing plant. The coals were also sieved or graded according to size. This large department of mine owes its French name to this: the triage.
